School of Statistics (SoST)

Established in 1971 under the visionary leadership of Dr. R. N. Jain, the School of Statistics began with the postgraduate programme, M.A./M.Sc. in Statistics, and has since emerged as a centre of excellence in Statistical Sciences and research. In 2019, the School expanded its academic offerings with the launch of the B.Sc. in Applied Statistics and Analytics programme to meet the rising demand for data-driven expertise. In alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) and with a renewed focus on strengthening foundational and interdisciplinary Statistical Sciences education, the School has taken a progressive step by restructuring its undergraduate offering. From this year onwards, the B.Sc. in Applied Statistics and Analytics programme has been transitioned into the newly introduced B.A./B.Sc. in Statistics. Additionally, the School has introduced an Integrated Dual Degree Programme (B.A./B.Sc. + M.A./M.Sc.) with exit options from the current academic session.

The School is also a recognized research centre offering Ph.D. programmes in Statistics, with major research areas including Design of Experiments, Sampling Techniques, Operations Research, Modeling and Simulation, Biostatistics, and Data Analysis.

Currently, the School offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral programmes with strong emphasis on academic excellence, research orientation, and industry relevance. The curriculum is designed to meet the evolving needs of industry, IT, finance, healthcare, research, and policy sectors in the era of Big Data. Students receive practical training in R Programming, SPSS, and Python, enabling them to undertake industrial projects and consultancy work.

Graduates from the School have secured distinguished positions in reputed multinational companies, research organizations, financial institutions, and government departments as Risk Analysts, Financial Analysts, Biostatisticians, Data Analysts, Statistical Officers (SO), Junior Statistical Officers (JSO), Research Officers, and Quality Analysts. A significant number of alumni have also built successful careers in academia, higher education, scientific research, and various public sector institutions, reflecting the strong academic foundation and professional competence imparted by the School.

Vision: To create an academically sound environment that nurtures, motivates and inspires excellence in research and teaching by imparting quality education in theoretical and practical aspects of statistics along with concern for society.

Mission: The mission of the School of Statistics is to promote excellence in teaching and research in Statistics in alignment with the University’s vision. The School strives to develop analytical and critical thinking, impart strong foundations in statistical theory, data analysis, and computational tools, and prepare students to address emerging global and technological challenges. The curriculum is skill-oriented and designed to foster research aptitude along with the effective application of statistical methods across diverse disciplines.
